Gina Bevan Bio

Hi! I'm Gina (Dr G) and welcome to my blog.

I am currently a Programme Director at Swansea University and an associate lecturer at The Open University and Cardiff University. My interests largely lie within queer pop culture and I continue to write on this topic for academic and commercial purposes. You can read some of my work in DIVA magazine.

I am particularly interested in the way different communities gravitate toward, and interpret, stories to make sense of, and to also construct, their identities. This is what mainly attracted me to the figure of Medusa. Why does an ancient monster, one meant to terrify and who was decapitated, refuse to die? What is it about the monster that thrills us? And why, more particularly, do marginalised groups see aspects of themselves reflected in Medusa, the monstrous Other?

I want to use this website as a platform to share my work and my journey to publishing my first book!

The PhD

My PhD thesis is an interdisciplinary work that is a mix of pop culture, queer theory, and classical reception. In my thesis, I created my own theoretical framework through which to read images of female pop stars onscreen - and I used Medusa to do so! I argue that the dynamics of the gaze in Medusa's myth are helpful for framing a better understanding of how images are created and received by diverse groups. â€‹
